HONDA RUBICON 500 vs.
YAMAHA GRIZZLY 450
Top straight-axle against new IRS machine
By the staff of Dirt Wheels
; Since its release back in 2001,
Honda’s Rubicon 500 has been a top
choice in the midsized 4x4 market. It
has undergone minor upgrades over
the years in the suspension and handling departments. So a year ago, we
pitted the Rubicon against Can-Am’s
Outlander 500, and the Honda came
out on top.
This month, we are comparing the
2011 version to another IRS-equipped
machine: the 2011 Yamaha Grizzly
450. It will be a test not only of speed,
handling and comfort, but also of
capability and reliability.
We took the two machines through
some of the toughest terrain known to
man. In just one short but brutal trail
ride, we can tell which machine out-
performs the other in a variety of con-
ditions. However, we took this pair on
numerous grueling and leisurely out-
ings. We also put the two machines to
work on a ranch for several weeks to
see how they hold up to the day-to-
day grind these midsized machines
were made for.
