move your eyebrows when you rock
the chin bar up and down. You do
not want hot spots, pinch points,
wrinkled ears or a fit so tight you
will get a headache. A helmet that is
comfortable for a full day of trail riding might fall over your eyes when
you land from a jump on a
motocross track. Know what you
want and need in helmet fit, and
shop for one that suits you and your
riding. Pay a little more for comfort
or a higher-quality helmet. It is
worth it in the end.
THINNING THE HERD
This buyer’s guide won’t hold all
of the helmets offered for off-roading. To narrow the number to something reasonable, we have information on the helmets that the company reps felt were the best value for
the money in their helmet lineup.
FEATURES: The VX-Pro3 is the
Rolls-Royce of helmets, with the features and the price to prove it. Arai
chooses a rounded shape to the helmet and chin bar to prevent the shell
catching or digging during a fall. The
visor is attached with plastic screws
so it will come off in a crash as well.
The visor is also vented to prevent
wind from catching it. Top-mount
ventilation ducts utilize low-pressure
areas behind the vent to draw strong
airflow through the helmet for ventilation, even at moderate speeds on
tighter tracks. The comfort liner and
cheek pads are fully removable,
washable and replaceable. They use

vents work with flow-through EPS
and comfort-liner air-system channels
that align to maximize airflow. The
quick-release washable comfort liner
and cheek pads are easy to remove
and clean. Molded rubber trim with a
removable nose guard assists in
keeping roost and other debris away
from your nose. Helmet hardware is
constructed using machined aluminum screws and stainless steel D-rings and rivets.
