PIONEER ENGINE HORSEPOWER
The California Air Resources
Board (CARB) finally released its
horsepower data concerning the
new Honda Pioneer 1000. In their
testing, which is tested near sea level
in Southern California, the 999cc parallel twin-cylinder Honda produces
57. 3 kilowatts, which translates to 76.8
horsepower. This reading is taken at
the end of the crankshaft, not at the
wheels. The same goes for machines
like the 109-horsepower RZR and
130-horsepower, turbocharged Can-Am Mavericks.
Honda’s dual clutch belt-less transmission should be able to handle
more power than a CVT belt system.
This paves the way for Honda to offer
up a more powerful 1000cc version
for a sport UTV. Furthermore, we
expect Yamaha to have a belt-less
system on their new sport SxS, which
we will be learning more about next
NEW JOHN DEERE 860 GATOR
When John Deere released the
Gator 850 a few years back, it was
unfortunately five years overdue
and didn’t really catch our attention.
John Deere is trying to keep their UTV
alive by slightly increasing the size
of the engine up to 860cc for 2016.
We hope John Deere has better news
than this about a future sport or utility UTV in the coming years. We know
the American company is capable of
bigger and better things.
Suzuki’s KingQuad 400 and
QuadSport Z90 are great machines
for exploration. The KingQuad 400
sports a fuel-injected, 376cc, four-stroke, four-valve engine that produces a smooth power output from
the bottom- to top-end power range.
A thermostat-controlled cooling fan
helps keep the engine operating at
cooler temps to prevent overheating.
To dampen the ride, you have 6. 7
inches of travel through independent
front A-arms and a rear swingarm
with twin shock absorbers. The
QuadSport Z90 offers a smooth CVT
transmission for easy operation for
riders 12 years and older. It features
an electric-start with a back-up recoil
starter and 1.6-gallon fuel tank with a
vacuum fuel petcock to automatically
stop fuel when the engine shuts off. A
single A-arm front suspension system
and a rear swingarm provide a comfortable ride. Drum brakes front and
rear bring this miniature machine to
a stop from those high-speed runs. To

500 and 750, go to page 34.
