❏ Yamaha recently invited the staff
to a round of the Southern California
Lucas Oil Regional Off-Road Racing
Series. We were impressed with the
atmosphere and the professionalism
we saw, and it seemed like there
was a lot of family involvement. The
premier classes are truck- and bug-gy-based, so they are not really a
subject for Dirt Wheels, but there are
also UTV-based classes and Trophy
Karts that use ATV motors that should
be interesting to ATV and UTV folks.
As spectators for the evening, we
will say that the series is an entertainment bargain. At Glen Helen
Raceway, the cost was $10 a person.
One of our editors took the whole
family, and he was shocked to find
out that tickets for all three and park-
ing added up to only $30. It was their
first time watching roll-cage-style rac-
ing live, and everyone enjoyed the
racing. As racers we tend to like the
racing and are willing to put up with
the trophy presentation. The family
members we had along enjoyed the
podium sessions, with the racers lit-
erally close enough to touch, though
much of that had to do with Yamaha’s
Corry Weller putting a whooping on
a large number of males in the UTV
class and everybody in the SR1 class.
The series appeared to have a very
strong safety ethic for the drivers and
crew. All classes require full SFI driver’s gear, head and neck restraints,
as well as a spotter and radios every
time the race cars are on the track.
There is a pace truck to keep the starts
from being crazy and to gather up
the field if there is an incident on the
track. There are other Toyota trucks
for the fire safety crew on the track
staffed with firemen, EMTs, fire-sup-pression equipment, Holmatro jaws of
life and extrication tools.
The Production 1000 UTV was the biggest of the night at the race we attended. Lucas uses a rolling start with two
rows of cars side by side.
Yamaha drivers Dustin Nelson (940) and
Corry Weller (948) spent much of their
time battling with each other.
