❏;There are a lot of choices for tires and
wheels in the UTV market these days.
The segment is getting so popular,
even automotive brands are jumping
into the game. However, what if you
just want to replace your stock tires
and maybe the wheels with something good and not break the bank?
AMS has been selling cost-effective
tire/wheel kits for ATVs for years and
now has a growing selection for UTV
owners. AMS is the house brand for
Parts Unlimited, so pretty much every
accessory shop on the planet carries
or can order their products. You can
also visit www.amstires.com.
This month we chose to try out AMS’
Radial Pro tire/wheel kit on an older
RZR XP1000. We went with the popular 30x10-14 sizing on all four corners.
The tires alone sell for $170 each.
The kit price is $289 for a mounted
Roll’n 104 wheel and tire. Center caps
are included, but lug nuts are extra.
That kit price is affordable, especially
when some other tires can sell for as
much as $250 apiece for just the tire.
The 7-inch-wide wheel we chose has
a 4-3 offset, meaning 3 inches of the
wheel is outside of the center point
and 4 inches goes inward. On the
RZR XP 1000 the stock wheels have
very little outside offset. It’s about 1/4
the back, so when you put four equal-sized wheels on a RZR, they will actually stick out a little farther in the front
than in the back. For casual riding on
this RZR, it’s not a bad thing.
The slightly wider footprint actually
added a little stability to the machine.
Cornering didn’t seem to be affected,
and we actually felt more comfortable
in the car. The machined cast-aluminum wheels provided a nice, clean
look as well as they replace the dull
brown stockers. The AMS wheels use
stock lug nuts, so you will not have to
carry an extra lug key with you in case
you do get a flat, but with an eight-ply
carcass that would be unlikely. In our
desert test we abused the heck out of
the tires and didn’t get any flats. There
was no hint of failure and very little
wear even after 100 miles. The tires
have a very predictable feel and roll
ultra smooth. In fact, the smooth-roll-ing nature of these tires is what we
noticed first, the AMS tires did great
in the sand, gripped on hardpack and
provided fine bump absorption. We
felt the best pressure to run the new
tires was at 12 psi and highly recommend them. ❏
AMS UTV TIRE
& WHEEL KIT
We like the tread pattern of the Radial
Pro and its rounded profile. Braking,
acceleration and traction are great, as
well as turning grip. The tire-and-wheel
package sells for $289 each.
The AMS Radial Pro is becoming one
of our favorite tires. We have tested it
on ATVs, small UTVs and now as a tire-and-wheel package on the RZR XP 1000.
The tire is very strong with an eight-ply
rating and has very predictable handling
This tire/wheel package can be found
at any accessory shop through Parts
Unlimited. The wheel offset will add 3-4
inches to the width of a RZR. It turned
out to be a great setup for this machine.
