If you want to know how to win King of the Hammers, follow
and watch Mitch Guthrie. He has won the event five times
in a row. He is patient and careful not to make any mistakes
and keeps moving forward.
In this race you are not allowed any outside help, except
from fellow racers, outside the designated pit area. It didn’t
take long for these two girl drivers—Katie Carlson and Vicki
Hahn—to get assistance from their competitors.
Although this race is over 100 miles long, we found a section
with multiple cars broken down in the same spot. If you are
having problems, it is better to stay near others in case you
need a hand or to borrow some tools.
This section is called Chocolate Thunder. It’s a spectator site
closest to the main pit area and the start/finish line. There

miscue put him on his side. About 10 minutes of winching
had him back in the race on his way to second place.
Like most desert races, you have to equip your car with a
spare of anything that can break and the tools to change it.
An axle change may only set you back five minutes.
