system in the steering stem. Instead
of pedaling, though, he might consider putting in a Honda ATC250R
motor. However, we do like the four
trumpet horns for warning people to
get out of his way.

We are using PRP window nets,
Pro Armor seat belts, and a Rugged
Radios intercom system linking our
HJC helmets together. In this first
race we used a mix of STI (front) and
EFX (rear) tires. Although all four
tires worked great, we are switching to ITP Ultracross tires for the next
PROJECT RACING RZR
Shortly after we finished up the
high-performance UTV shootout in
the April issue, we started to set up
our Polaris RZR XP 1000 for a local
desert racing series called the Pure
1000 ( www.averacing.com).
We are setting out to see how
well the machine, basically in stock
trim, will compete with highly modified UTVs. We are only doing the
required safety modifications and a
couple of simple bolt-ons.
After each race we will report on
the results—in the magazine and at
you how the vehicle and its components are holding up. So far we
have one overall win in one attempt.
The only issue we have experienced
is the main oil seal in the gearbox
worked itself loose, causing a leak.
Our fix was to pop it back into place
and add a couple dabs of JB Weld
around it to keep it in place for the
