ISAW A3 EXTREME
Clear as day
By the staff of Dirt Wheels
❏ Isaw has certainly earned its keep
in the broad range of action cameras, providing insanely clear video
and photo quality. ATV riders can
strap action cameras to their helmets
or even their chest to gather footage of the trails and machines they
love. There is no shortage of brands
angling for part of the market, but we
think the new company, Isaw, has a
real shot in the action-cam business.
Through our exhaustive testing of
their A3 Extreme camera, we realized
that maybe GoPro and manufacturers alike need to take a backseat on
the action for a while, since there is a
new contender in town.
The Isaw A3 Extreme surprised
us with its clarity. During the day,
the image is stunning and powerful.
What first set this camera apart from
other action cameras was the fact that
the Isaw has a zoom feature. How rad
is that?! The Extreme has a 4x zoom
feature that is easily accessible by
holding down one of the front camera
buttons. Most of all the other modes
are also easily accessible. The camera has all sorts of video modes, from
The Extreme comes with various
mounts right out of the box, and Isaw
carries a lot more like this chest mount
that gives you great filming capabilities.
The camera comes with two back plates
for the housing. One is waterproof and
sealed, while this skeleton plate allows
the microphone to pick up a lot more
sound when you’re filming.
The clarity and wide-angle view of this
camera are impressive, capturing your
desired video or photos in high definition.
Isaw’s most powerful action cam features a rear LCD screen and video capabilities of up to 60 frames per second
out of a zoomable fish-eye lens.
720 HD at 30 fps to 1200 HD at 60 fps.
You can choose the angle of your view
from narrow, medium and wide view.
The normal camera modes include
bursts at multiple second intervals,
as well as a click-to-shoot function in
different mega-pixel sizes. They even
include an aqua mode for those of
you who love to play in the water.
This cam has WiFi built in so that you
can connect to your smartphone or
tablet via a free app, downloadable
at an app store. Isaw sells a remote
control for the camera at $99. While it
does not control all camera functions,
it is still great to have. The functionality of the Extreme is impressive and is
now used as our action cam of choice.
CASES AND MOUNTING
Most users of action cameras need
the cases to be sturdy due to occasional impacts and falls. The Isaw case
does not disappoint with its strong,
tight construction. The cam comes
with a full waterproof case with an
interchangeable back plate that is not
waterproof, yet allows better audio to
reach the camera’s microphone. The
locking mechanism of the case can
be a bit tricky to unclip, but certainly
gives a sense of protection. A skeleton
case is provided with the camera for
individuals that want to shoot with an
exposed lens for clearer images. We
feel that when riding trails, sand or
the track, you should not use the skeleton case if you want your camera
protected from the elements. A small
lens cap is provided with the Extreme
for the skeleton case. Isaw sells many
mounts, like chest, suction cup, head,
sticky and other specialized mounts,
for its cameras, which are durable
and easy to use.
One issue we had with the Isaw A3
Extreme was the size of the camera. It
is a bit bulky, which makes getting the
right angle sometimes difficult in tight
places. Having a screen come built in
on the Isaw is a great feature to have
and without the need to spend more
money to get one. On the other hand,
the Isaw has the LCD screen built in
without the touch function and no
ability to add any other items to the
camera, like an external battery pack.
It is easy to purchase an extra battery
for $20 and change them out when
needed. A 32GB memory card is all
that is needed to outlast the battery,
but will support up to 64GB. The Isaw
is pretty lightweight for its size at 110
grams, which makes it easy to carry
The Isaw A3 Extreme is a great
camera. Costing $350, it comes with a
lot of mounts and cases out of the box.
Functionality and ease of use are all
apparent within the first couple sessions of filming or shooting. We were
impressed with this action cam and
know you will be too. For more information, see www.isawcam.com. ❏
