Can-Am’s new power steering was a welcome addition to the Commander models.
Now we hope they make the 4WD engagement even more aggressive.
; Can-Am’s Maverick UTV is the talk
of the town these days. It’s offered
with a 1000cc engine, has a ton of
wheel travel and has already had
success on several racing circuits.
However, Can-Am also has a 1000cc
UTV that’s just as fast, can haul a ton
of cargo and sells for over $4000 less.
That affordable UTV is the
Commander. It’s available with a
800cc or 1000cc engine and has electronic power steering, something the
Maverick does not.
Can-Am goes first class all the time
with their machines, and the
Commander is no different. The cock-
pit is the most plush in its class. It fea-
tures quality bucket seats, a roomy
leg area, a padded steering wheel
and a dash that looks like it was
designed for an airplane.
The Commander has a keyed igni-
tion with a push-button starter similar
to high-end sports cars. That key is
coded to provide some security
against theft. The shifter, passenger
grab handle, glovebox and even the
cup holders are all constructed with
quality in mind, not cost savings.
The price of the 800cc XT model
we tested starts at a reasonable
$14,999. For that investment, you get
the upscale cockpit in yellow or red.
The camo option will set you back
an additional $850, and the Metallic
Gray option is $700 more.
Even the base-model XTs come
