more important, he hasn’t had one bad moto to harm his
Young Joel Hetrick looks admirably composed—apparently a
full lookback jump in the mud is no big deal for him. The
weather and the accompanying mud have been huge factors
in the 2013 series.
Joel Hetrick has been very impressive on his Honda, though Yamaha-mounted rivals Chad Wienen and Thomas Brown are
right in the mix of this start. Action is heated at the start, since there are cash awards for holeshot winners and for fast qualifying times.

Motocross National Championship,
sanctioned by AMA. With the nation
gripped by a drought, the ATV/MX
pros have yet to see a day with two
dry motos. What are the odds? Despite
the sloppy conditions that have prevailed, the racing has been intense.
The opener in Washington, Georgia,
had 23 pro riders lined up at the
muddy Aonia Pass MX track, creating
a full gate for the first time in recent
history. With the withdrawal of all the
full-factory teams, it is great to see the
private teams stepping up to the point
that there could be a full gate!
Defending champion Chad Wienen
rode smart on his Yamaha and collect-
ed the first victory of 2013, but it was
with a 3-2 finish, while Honda-mount-
ed Joel Hetrick won the first moto and
Josh Creamer (BSC Can-Am) nailed
the second moto. First moto winner
Hetrick battled with Josh Upperman for
most of the second moto and was in
position to fight for the overall, but with
a few turns left in the second moto,
Upperman spun out, and Hetrick ran
into the back of Upperman’s machine.
He was unable to restart quickly and
saw the overall slip away.
Round two was held at Muddy
Creek Raceway in Blountville,
Tennessee, and the sun actually came
out for one moto. Corrosion Hetrick
Racing’s Joel Hetrick was unstoppable
in both motos, and he closed up to
within one point of Wienen in the
