❏ Adding high-end aftermarket
shocks on a utility ATV is one of
those things you don’t know you need
until you try it. When companies like
Elka Suspension first started building
utility shocks we were skeptical, but
then quickly impressed with how they
improved the ride. Last month we
brought you a look at the new Elka
Stage 4 shocks for the Outlander 500
and Polaris Sportsman. This month
we got our hands on brand-new Elka
products for the redesigned Yamaha
Grizzly and Kodiak.
For these two machines Yamaha
used the exact same frame and
engines, but separated them with
different clutch packages and suspension. The Grizzly is more of a tall,
long-travel setup, while the Kodiak is
a bit more compact and has a lower
Yamaha equipped both machines
with real good shocks for a variety of
riding. However, they have their limits, and that’s where a fully adjustable
rebuildable shock like the Elka Stage
4 comes in.
On Yamaha’s flagship ATV, the
Grizzly 700, we bolted up Elka’s Stage
4s. These shocks feature compression,
rebound and a threaded adjuster.
They are sold for $999 per pair for the
front or the back. Installation was simple. You can install the shocks with a
few hand tools without even removing
the tires. You do have to remove the
plastic CV boot guards, as they are in
the way of the shock bolts.
The stock shocks are good on the
Grizzly, but what they provide in comfort sometimes hurts them in some
aspects. Furthermore, the 26-inch tires
Yamaha added to the machine make
it feel tall in some situations. The main
thing the Elkas cured was side-hill
stability and corners. The Grizzly now
rides perfectly flat in those situations
and has no more hint of body roll. You
instantly feel like you are riding a sportier machine with the Elkas installed.
Rebound control was enhanced too.
Instead of bouncing on certain bumps,
the Grizzly would roll over the bumps
then stay planted on the ground.
